Parlem de Pintura...

Thomas Hardy (Derbyshire, 1757 - c.1805) va ser un pintor anglès. Es desconeix gran part de la seva vida i carrera sent la primera referència de 1778, any que va entrar a la Royal Academy Schools, ens artístic on hi va exhibir a l'entorn de 31 pintures entre els anys 1778 i 1798. Com a pintor es va especialitzar ràpidament en retrats i en aquest gènere, especificament, en la realització de molts quadres de músics actius en aquell temps a Londres, com per exemple Joseph Haydn i Ignaz Pleyel. Thomas Hardy es creu va morir a l'entorn del 1805 si bé algunes fonts la van situar el 14 de setembre de 1804.



Parlem de Música...

William Shield (Swalwell, 5 de març de 1748 - London, 25 de gener de 1829) va ser un compositor anglès. Es va formar inicialment amb el seu pare abans de viatjar a Newcastle, on va rebre formació de Charles Avison i on va participar en els seus primers recitals com a intèrpret de violí. També aquells primers anys de carrera va començar a compondre si bé les obres d'aquell període es van perdre. A l'entorn del 1770 i després de finalitzar els seus estudis, va assolir el càrrec de líder d'una orquestra teatral i de director de concerts a Scarborough i poc després a Durham. El 1772 i després de la recomanació rebuda de Luigi Borghi, es va traslladar a Londres on va entrar com a violinista del King’s Theatre. Allà hi va romandre els propers divuit anys compaginant aquesta feina amb la de compositor del Covent Garden, en un càrrec que va preservar fins el 1797 i on va fer amistat amb Joseph Haydn. El 1779 va ser admès a la Society of Musicians i a partir del 1790 va ser-ho del King’s Music. A partir d'aquells anys va començar a fer-se un nom gràcies als seus intermezzos i òperes de petit format, entre elles i la més representada, Rosina (1782), programada unes 200 vegades a Londres i amb la qual va guanyar una considerable fortuna. Paral·lelement, va desenvolupar una important labor de preservació i difusió de música popular anglesa molta de la qual va incorporar en les seves obres. Com a teòric, va publicar diversos tractats, entre ells, An Introduction to Harmony (London, 1800) i The Rudiments of Thoroughbass (London, 1815). El 1817 va assolir el càrrec de Master of the King’s Music i el 1818 va publicar la seva darrera obra. Finalment, i després d'una carrera de gran èxit, va morir a Londres el gener de 1829.
