William Byrd (London, c.1540 - Stondon Massey, 4 de juliol de 1623) va ser un organista i compositor anglès. Fill de Thomas Byrd, es va formar probablement com a cantant del cor de la Capella Reial sota la direcció de Thomas Tallis. El 25 de març de 1563 va ser nomenat Organist and Master of the Choristers de la Catedral de Lincoln en un càrrec que va preservar fins el 1569. El 1568 es va casar amb Julian Birley amb qui va tenir diversos fills, entre ells, Thomas Byrd (1576-c.1652), músic i compositor entre altres a Valladolid. El febrer de 1572, i després de la mort de Robert Parsons, va jurar com a Gentleman de la Capella Reial on també constava que Byrd era organista de la capella juntament amb Tallis. Aquells primers anys va començar a publicar motets llatins i algunes lamentacions les quals, no obstant, havien estat escrits anys abans de la dècada del 1570. El 1575 va rebre la protecció directa d'Elizabeth I tant pel que fa a composició musical com a edició, impressió i publicació en paper. També en aquesta empresa Byrd i Tallis van col·laborar conjuntament publicant la seva primera col·lecció, per nom Cantiones, quae ab argumento sacrae vocantur i dedicada a la reina, el 1575. El 1577 es va traslladar amb la seva família a Harlington on la seva devoció vers l'església catòlica es va fer més intensa. El 1585, i després de la mort del seu col·lega Tallis, va establir la seva pròpia empresa musical publicant de forma successiva les col·leccions Psalmes, Sonets, & Songs of Sadnes and Pietie (1588), Songs of Sundrie Natures (1589), i Cantiones sacrae (1589 i 1591). També a partir del 1591 va compondre un volum, només preservat en manuscrit, de música per a teclat les partitures del qual van aparèixer publicades molts anys després amb el títol de Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. A l'entorn de 1593 es va traslladar amb la seva família a Stondon Massey on ja hi va romandre la resta de la seva vida. Després de la coronació de James I, les perspectives dels catòlics es van reforçar temporalment fet que va provocar les tres publicacions següents. En la seva col·lecció de tres misses i dos llibres de Gradualia (1605 i 1607), va tractar de proporcionar de manera individualitzada un repertori litúrgic bàsic, que comprenia música per a l'ordinari, és a dir, les parts invariables de la missa, i per al propter, és a dir, les parts de la missa que variaven segons el dia o la festa de totes les celebracions principals. Els darrers anys, i després del gran èxit assolit, es va retirar a Stondon Massey on hi va morir el juliol de 1623.
