John Philip Falter (Plattsmouth, 28 de febrer de 1910 - University of Pennsylvania Hospital, 20 de maig de 1982) va ser un pintor nord-americà. Va estudiar a l'Institut d'Art de Kansas City i més tard es va traslladar a Nova York on es va matricular a l'Art Students League. Més endavant va assistir a classes a la Grand Central School of Art on va estudiar amb George Wright. El 1930 va iniciar professionalment la seva carrera com a pintor en un any en què va vendre la seva primera obra a la revista Liberty. A partir d'aquest primer èxit, va poder fer nous contactes i va continuar publicant moltes de les seves obres en revistes 'pulp magazines'. Poc després es va convertir en l'il·lustrador del The Saturday Evening Post. Durant els seus anys amb el Post, va pintar més de 200 portades, majoritàriament amb escenes que va experimentar en la seva joventut a Nebraska i Kansas, així com 47 llibres. Va ser també un bon retratista i va tenir l'oportunitat de pintar els ídols del jazz de l'època com Louis Armstrong i Art Tatum. Els darrers anys, va pintar retrats d'una sèrie de personatges famosos, probablement per encàrrec, entre ells l'actriu Olivia de Havilland, l'actor James Cagney i l'almirall William Halsey. Va morir a Pennsylvania el maig de 1982.

Kurt Magnus Atterberg (Göteborg, 12 de desembre de 1887 - Stockholm, 15 de gener de 1974) va ser un compositor suec i germà del famós químic Albert Atterberg. Es va formar al Conservatori d'Estocolm on va acabar els estudis el 1911. Poc després va realitzar diverses activitats abans d'assumir, el 1916, la direcció de l'orquestra del Teatre Reial i a partir del 1940 del secretariat permanent de l'Acadèmia Reial de Música. Com a compositor va destacar pel seu cicle de nou Simfonies escrites en un període comprès entre el 1911 i el 1957, la majoria d'elles, en un estil neo-romàntic i properes a la filosofia de Sibelius. Va ser autor també de nombrosa música de cambra, d'obra vocal secular (òperes com 'Fanal' de 1934 o 'Aladdin' de 1941) i religiosa (cantates i una Missa de Rèquiem, entre altres) així com de dos Concerts per a violí, un Concert per a Piano i altres obres orquestrals. Considerat un dels més grans compositors moderns de Suècia, juntament amb Hugo Alfven, va morir als 86 anys a Estocolm.

Atterberg’s manifold activities have diluted appreciation of his music, and in later years he met with less response than at the beginning of his career. Nevertheless, with Rangström, he was one of the leading Swedish composers in the generation after Peterson-Berger, Stenhammar and Alfvén, producing his best work in symphonies and stage music. The point of departure for his first two symphonies was German and Scandinavian Romanticism (Brahms and Alfvén), though he inclined less to detailed thematic working than to a kind of al fresco technique, with melodic lines – often cantilenas in an assimilated folk style – set off against colourful backgrounds. Having added an impressionist touch in the Third Symphony (arguably his best) and realistic effects in the symphonic poem Älven (‘The River’, 1929), he completed his repertory of symphonic procedures with polytonal elements, which he used in varying degrees up to his last symphony, the Ninth (1955–6). His Sixth Symphony won the prize awarded by the Columbia Graphophone Company for the Schubert centenary (1928). Some of his five operas and his two best ballets had many performances in Europe during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in Germany. Best known of these was the ballet De fåvitska jungfrurna (‘The Foolish Virgins’, 1920), written for the Ballets Suédois of Paris. Bäckahästen (‘The White Horse’, 1923–4), with its naive folkloristic tone and Singspiel character, also met with success, and Fanal (1929–32) is an effective, ballad-style drama of freedom in 16th-century Germany. All Atterberg’s stage works rely on decorative effect rather than psychological profundity. His music for Maeterlinck’s Soeur Béatrice is typical in its lyrical-elegiac, slightly Impressionist treatment of sentiment; the suite drawn from it is one of his most frequently performed works.
