William Sterndale Bennett (
Sheffield, 13 d'abril de 1816 -
St. John's Wood, 1 de febrer de 1875) va ser un compositor i organista anglès. Orfe de pare quan era molt petit, es va criar amb el seu avi a Cambridge, de qui també va rebre les primeres lliçons musicals. El 1824 el van inscriure en el cor de la capella del
King College i el 1826 a l'
Acadèmia Reial de Música, on va ser alumne d'aquesta institució durant 10 anys, estudiant piano amb W. H. Holmes i
Cipriani Potter, i composició amb
Charles Lucas i el Dr. Crotch. Durant aquest temps va compondre alguns treballs que van ser molt apreciats, en els quals en van destacar les influències del romanticisme alemany, país que va visitar sovint entre els anys 1836 a 1842. En un dels festivals musicals de Rhenish a Düsseldorf, va conèixer a
Mendelssohn, a qui va tornar a trobar ben aviat a Leipzig, on els músics principals de la generació del renaixement musical el van acollir. En un dels concerts celebrats a l'
Gewandhaus, Bennett va interpretar el seu
Concert No.3, que va ser rebut amb entusiasme. Mendelssohn val a dir va ser la influència més intensa, un bon exemple d'això es pot veure en el seu
Capriccio in Re menor. El seu gran èxit en el continent establí la seva posició per retornar a Anglaterra. El 1834 fou elegit com a organista de la capella de St. Anne. Aquest mateix any va compondre l’
Obertura Parisina i el
Concert en do menor amb l'estil de
Mozart. Un inèdit
Concert en fa menor i l’
Obertura The Naiads, impresa per
Broadwood & Sons, que ja li havien ofert al compositor el 1836 a Leipzig, i després li van oferir un concert a la Gewandhaus el 13 de febrer de 1837. Bennett va visitar Leipzig per segona vegada el 1840-41.
De tornada a Londres, es va dedicar principalment a l'ensenyança pràctica. El 1844 es va casar amb Marie Anne, filla del capità James Wood. El 1856 va ser nomenat professor de música a la
Universitat de Cambridge, any en què també el van contractar com a director permanent de la
Societat Filharmònica. En aquest lloc hi va romandre fins el 1866, any en què el van nomenar director de la Royal Academy of Music. Degut als seus deures professionals, els seus últims anys no van ser els més creatius, i en prou feines va escriure obra nova. L'encant principal de les composicions de Bennett, sense mencionar la seva mestria absoluta de la forma musical, va derivar de la dolcesa del seu concepte. Amb l'excepció de l’òpera, Bennett va provar fortuna en quasi totes les formes diferents tant de gèneres vocals com instrumentals. Els seus millors treballs van incloure la música per a piano (tres esborranys:
El llac, The Millstream i La font, i el seu Concert de piano n.º 3); música per a orquestra (la seva
Simfonia en sol menor i la seva
Obertura The Naiads); i música vocal (la
Cantata The May Queen, escrita per al festival inaugural de Leeds de 1885). I pel Jubileu d'Or de la Philarmonic Society, va escriure l'
Obertura Paradise and the Peri, l'any 1862. També va escriure la cantata sagrada,
La muller de Samaria, escrita per al
Festival Triennal de Birmingham de 1867. El 1870 la
Universitat d'Oxford li van atorgar el grau honorari de D.C.L.; un anys més tard, el
Knighted, i el 1872 va rebre testimoni públic al
St. James Hall, a Londres. Poc temps abans de morir, va escriure una sonata anomenada
The Maid of Orleans, i va compondre una peça programa-música basada en la tragèdia de
Friedrich von Schiller. Va morir a St. John's Wood el febrer de 1875.
