Evaristo Felice Dall'Abaco [Abaco, D'Abacuch]

(Verona, 12 July 1675 - Munich, 12 July 1742)

Italian cellist and composer. Born into a prominent family, he trained on the violin and cello during his youth before establishing himself as a sought-after musician in Modena by 1696, where he likely developed his affinity for the French style. In 1704, he joined the Bavarian court orchestra as a cellist. Following the Elector Maximilian II Emmanuel’s defeat in the War of the Spanish Succession, he accompanied the exiled court through the Netherlands and France, during which time he married Marie Clémence Bultinck. Upon the court's return to Munich in 1715, his loyalty was rewarded with appointments as Konzertmeister and electoral councillor. His subsequent compositions increasingly integrated French stylistic traits, and he became a central figure in Munich's musical life, hosting early academic soirées. However, following Maximilian's death in 1726, the successor Karl Albrecht favored a more contemporary musical style, leading to Dall'Abaco's gradual marginalization. His final published work, '12 Concerti à più istrumenti ... opera VI', appeared in 1735, and he retired on a pension in 1740. His son Joseph-Marie-Clément Dall'Abaco (1710-1805) was a cellist and composer.

Evaristo Felice Dall'Abaco

(Verona, 12 July 1675 - Munich, 12 July 1742)

Italian composer. He was born into a family of high social standing, his father being a jurist. As a boy he learnt the violin and the cello, possibly under Torelli until the latter's removal to Bologna in 1685. In 1696 Dall'Abaco went to Modena, where his services as a musician were much in demand despite his not being attached to the court orchestra. His noted penchant for the French style may date from his Modena days, since the director of the orchestra, Ambreville, was French. After 19 September 1701 no further trace of Dall'Abaco exists in Modena, and the next mention of him is early in 1704 as a cellist in the Bavarian court, where one of his colleagues was J.C. Pez. The defeat of the reigning elector, Maximilian II Emmanuel, in the War of the Spanish Succession forced him to flee to the Netherlands, where he brought a large retinue including many of his own musicians. Setting up court in Brussels, Maximilian continued to patronize the arts extravagantly, but further French reverses caused him to withdraw to Mons in 1706. The capitulation of Mons following the battle of Malplaquet in 1709 sent the elector back to France, and a relatively impoverished court was established in Compiègne by grace of Louis XIV. Throughout these unsettled times Dall'Abaco remained at the elector's side. He had married Marie Clémence Bultinck in the Netherlands, and their son Joseph-Marie-Clément was born in 1709 or 1710. Dall'Abaco must have deepened his acquaintance with the French style after prolonged residence in the Low Countries and France, though it was only after Maximilian's eventual triumphant return to Munich in April 1715 that specifically French traits began to creep into his published music. Dall'Abaco's loyalty and competence were rewarded by his appointment as Konzertmeister in the reconstituted court orchestra and his elevation to the rank of electoral councillor in 1717, a fact proudly advertised on the title-page of his fifth publication, a set of concertos for various combinations. He also participated as a soloist in ‘academies’, the precursors of the musical soirées of the 19th century, some of which were held at his own house. Dall'Abaco remained in the service of the Bavarian court after Maximilian's death in 1726 and the accession of the new elector, his son Karl Albrecht. Though a music lover like his father, the new elector favoured a more up-to-date style of music than his Konzertmeister would, or could, supply, with the result that Dall'Abaco's musical activities became increasingly relegated to the background. A second set of concertos, published by Le Cène in 1735 as Dall'Abaco's op.6, is the sole proof of his continued creative work during this final phase. He seems to have retired on a pension in 1740.

Parlem de Pintura...

Dirck van Baburen (Wijk bij Duurstede, c.1595 - Utrecht, 21 de febrer de 1624) va ser un pintor holandès. Es creu es va traslladar a l'entorn del 1599 a Utrecht, ciutat on el 1611 apareix registrat com aprenent de Paulus Moreelse i com a membre del Gremi de Sant Lluc. Després de finalitzar la seva formació, es va traslladar a Itàlia on va viure a Parma i posteriorment a Roma. El 1617 va participar amb Davis de Haen en la decoració d'una de les capelles de l'església San Pietro in Montorio. A Itàlia es va familiaritzar amb l'obra de Caravaggio la qual es va convertir en un dels seus principals referents. També a Itàlia va gaudir de notable prestigi rebent la protecció de Vincenzo Giustiniani i del cardenal Scipione Borghese. A l'entorn del 1621 va tornar a Utrecht on va exportar amb gran èxit l'estil italià que ràpidament va crear escola i gran quantitat de seguidors. Dirck van Baburen va morir a Utrecht el febrer de 1624.

Evaristo Felice Dall'Abaco (Verona, 12 de juliol de 1675 - München, 12 de juliol de 1742) va ser un compositor italià. Es va formar en violí i violoncel probablement amb Torelli. El 1696 es va traslladar a Mòdena on va treballar de forma no oficial per l'orquestra de la cort. Precisament a Mòdena, i gràcies a l'estreta col·laboració amb Ambreville, el director de l'orquestra, va desenvolupar el seu característic estil francès. A partir del 1701 el seu rastre es va perdre fins el 1704, any que va constar com a violoncel·lista de la cort de Baviera en companyia, entre altres, de J.C. Pez. Durant la Guerra de Successió Espanyola es va veure obligat a fugir, en companyia de tota la cort de Maximilià II, a Holanda, on va seguir treballant fidelment al servei del seu protector. A l'entorn del 1706 es van establir a Brussel·les si bé hi van romandre poc temps. El 1709 es van instal·lar a Compiègne sota la protecció de Lluís XIV en un temps en què es va casar amb Marie Clémence Bultinck i en què va néixer el seu fill, i posteriorment compositor, Joseph-Marie-Clément Dall'Abaco. El 1715, i en companyia de l'exiliat elector Maximilià II, va tornar a Munich on va poder reprendre les seves activitats musicals i on, gràcies a la total fidelitat amb l'elector, va ser nomenat Konzertmeister de l'orquestra i councillor. El 1726, i després de la mort de l'elector Maximilià II, va preservar tots els seus càrrecs i privilegis assolits. Com a compositor, tot i no ser especialment prolífic, si va ser molt apreciat, especialment per les seves col·leccions de Concerti a più istrumenti. El 1740 es va retirar definitivament a Munich, ciutat on va morir el juliol de 1742.
