Josef (Joseph, Giuseppe) Antonín (Anton, Antonio) Štěpán [Steffan, Steffani, Stepan, Stephan et al.]

(Kopidlno, bap. 14 March 1726 - Vienna, 12 April 1797)

Bohemian composer and keyboardist. Following early instruction from his father, a local cantor, he fled to Vienna to escape Prussian troops during the War of the Austrian Succession, eventually acquiring Count Schlick as his patron. He became a favorite pupil of Georg Christoph Wagenseil, under whose tutelage he achieved a reputation as one of the best keyboardists in Vienna. He was appointed as instructor to princesses Maria Carolina and Maria Antonia (later Marie Antoinette). In 1775 he was forced to retire due to failing eyesight, though he retained his salary. The remainder of his life was spent as a guest in the various salons of the city, where his Lieder (most of which were published) were popular. As a composer, his music conforms to the conventions of the style prevalent in Vienna of the period. These include two Masses (and a Requiem), seven hymns, numerous other smaller sacred works, one oratorio, 79 Lieder, 47 keyboard sonatas/divertimentos, 224 other individual works for the keyboard (including cadenzas), 12 symphonies, 45 concertos for the keyboard, seven piano trios, a violin sonata, and two piano quartets. His music remains largely unexplored.

Parlem de Pintura...

Benjamin Samuel Bolomey (Lausanne, 19 de maig de 1739 - Lausanne, 19 de desembre de 1819) va ser un pintor suís. Fill de François Louis Bolomay i Pernette Mercier, es va formar amb François Boucher a París, en una ciutat on hi va viure entre els anys 1751 i 1762. Després es va traslladar a La Haia on va entrar com a membre del Gremi de Pintors i on a partir del 1777 va ser director de l'Acadèmia de Belles Arts. També durant la seva estada a Holanda va ser pintor de la cort de Willem V en una època en què es va especialitzar en la realització de retrats. El 1791 va tornar a Lausanne on va entrar com a membre del Grand Conseil du canton de Vaud. Benjamin Bolomey va morir a Lausanne el desembre de 1819.

Josef Antonín [Steffan/Stephan, Joseph Anton; Steffani/Stephani, Giuseppe Antonio] Štěpán (Kopidlno, bap. 14 de març de 1726 - Wien, 12 d'abril 1797) va ser un professor, pianista i compositor bohemi. Fill d'organista, es creu va rebre formació musical del seu pare abans de traslladar-se, a l'entorn del 1741, a Viena. Allà va rebre la protecció del comte František Jindřich Šlik i va estudiar violí amb Hammel (?) i teclat amb G.C. Wagenseil. Finalitzada la seva formació, va començar a participar com a intèrpret de clavecí assolint, ràpidament, ampli ressò pel seu virtuosisme. El 14 de juliol de 1766 va ser nomenat Klaviermeister de l'arxiduquessa Maria Carolina i de Maria Antonia en un càrrec que va preservar fins el 1775. Pels seus serveis, va ser pensionat amb 500 florins anuals si bé va seguir treballant com a intèrpret, compositor i professor privat. La seva alumne Caroline Pichler va documentar ‘a humorous man of a distinctive personality, who combined the oddities common to all artists, especially musicians, with some peculiarities of his own. But he knew his art thoroughly and had an inexhaustible fund of good humour’. Josef Antonín Štěpán va morir a Viena l'abril de 1797.
