Parlem de Pintura...
John Closterman [Cloosterman, Klosterman] (Osnabrück, 1660 - London, 1711) va ser un pintor alemany. Fill d'un pintor modest, es va formar amb el seu pare. El 1696 es va traslladar a París on va entrar com a aprenent al taller de François de Troy. El 1681 va viatjar a Anglaterra i va treballar per a John Riley. A la mort del seu patró el 1691, va finalitzar alguns dels seus retrats captant l'atenció de Charles Seymour, duc de Somerset. El 1696 va viatjar a Itàlia sota la protecció de Lord Ashley i de James Stanhope, fill de l'ambaixador d'Anglaterra davant de la cort espanyola. També en aquelles dates va viatjar a Madrid on va procurar accedir al càrrec de pintor de la reina. Allà va ser rebut per Carles II que li va encarregar un retrat d'un dels nans de la cort per comprovar l'habilitat del pintor. Satisfet, va ser contractat per Carles II per a retratar a la reina. Finalitzada la seva feina a Espanya, va tornar a Itàlia des d'on va tornar a Anglaterra. Segons Arnold Houbraken, aquests darrers anys van ser convulsos per la vida del pintor si bé no va deixar de pintar. Finalment, el 1711 va morir en la pobresa a Londres.
Parlem de Música...
Daniel Purcell (c.1664 - London, bur. 26 de novembre de 1717) va ser un organista i compositor anglès. Fill de Thomas Purcell (c.1610-1682), nebot d'Henry Purcell (c.1610-1664) i germà d'Henry Purcell, es va formar com a cantant del cor de la Capella Reial entre els anys 1678 i 1682. A partir del 1689 va ser nomenat organista del Magdalen College d'Oxford on hi va romandre fins el 1695 i on es va iniciar en la composició. El 1695, i després de la mort del seu germà Henry, es va traslladar a Londres on va començar a treballar com a compositor d'obres teatrals fins el 1707. Posteriorment a aquesta data, va deixar d'escriure música teatral per a dedicar-se a la composició d'obres instrumentals. En aquell temps va treballar també com a organista de St Dunstan's-in-the-East i a partir del 1713 com a organista a St. Andrew's, Holborn. Aquests darrers anys va adaptar progressivament el seu estil a la moda italiana publicant una col·lecció de cantates en anglès però en estil italià. Tot i les comparacions desfavorables que es van establir amb el seu germà més famós i reconegut, Daniel Purcell va ser un compositor destacat i admirat a Londres, la ciutat on hi va viure la quasi totalitat de la seva vida i on hi va morir el novembre de 1717.
