Konstantinos Volanakis [Κωνσταντίνος Βολανάκης] (Heraklion [Ηράκλειο Κρήτης], 17 de març de 1837 - Piraeus [Πειραιάς], 29 de juny de 1907) va ser un pintor grec. De ben petit, la seva família es va traslladar a Trieste, ciutat on Volanakis va iniciar-se en el dibuix dels vaixells i els ports de la zona. Gràcies al seu prematur talent, els seus pares el van enviar a Munich on va estudiar a l'Acadèmia de Belles Arts amb Karl von Piloty. Allà va entrar en contacte amb un grup d'artistes grecs format per Nikolaos Gyzis, Georgios Jakobides, Nikiphoros Lytras i Polychronis Lembesis. El 1869 va guanyar un concurs de dibuix organitzat per l'emperador Francesc Josep I d'Àustria per tal de commemorar la Batalla de Lissa. Aquesta circumstància va afavorir posteriors encàrrecs i va despertar l'interès del públic i la crítica. El 1874 es va casar i uns anys més tard va decidir tornar definitivament a Grècia cansat, per altra banda, del clima alemany. A partir del 1903 va ser professor de l'Escola de Belles Arts d'Atenes on, entre altres, va ser tutor de Michalis Oikonomou i de Sophia Laskaridou. Tot i romandre en aquest càrrec la resta de la seva vida, els darrers anys va viure immers en habituals problemes econòmics fruit, també, del progressiu desinterès per la seva obra. Va morir a Piraeus el juny de 1907.

Parlem de Música...
Spyridon Samaras [Σπυρίδων Σαμάρας] (Corfu [Κέρκυρα], 29 de novembre de 1861 - Athens [Αθήνα], 7 d'abril de 1917) va ser un compositor grec. Es va formar a Corfu amb Spyridon Xyndas, posteriorment al Conservatori d'Atenes, amb Federico Bolognini, Angelo Mascheroni i Enrico Stancampiano, i finalment al Conservatori de París amb Massenet, Delibes, Théodore Dubois i Gounod. A partir del 1885 va començar la seva carrera a París abans de traslladar-se a Itàlia, on va estrenar amb èxit algunes de les seves primeres òperes a Milà i a Roma. A partir d'aleshores, va romandre a Itàlia on va estrenar la majoria de les seves òperes i on hi va viure fins el 1911, any que va tornar a Grècia. Com a compositor, va ser autor, a banda d'òperes, d'obra coral de caràcter patriòtic i de nombrosa música instrumental, principalment música per a piano. Samaras, considerat un dels millors representants musicals del seu país, va morir a Atenes l'abril de 1917.
